12-05-2008- PANORAMA OF CINEMA IN THE GULF REGION COUNTRIES

The coordinator of International Euro Arab Film Festival has recently returned from her stay in two of the more outstanding Arabic Cinema Festivals in the Gulf region. On the one hand, the Gulf Film Festival of Dubai that celebrated his first edition with a shining selection of most representative films of the cinema made in the Gulf countries (United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, Iraq and Yemen). And on the other hand, the Jazeera International Documentary Film Festival, that celebrated its 4th edition in Doha, capital of Qatar, and in whose previous edition Mr. Ghaleb Jaber, President of the Araguaney Foundation, was member of the international jury. As a result of her stay in both festivals, the coordinator of AMAL Festival, Mrs. Atalaya Parga, had the occasion to know first hand the last cinematographic new features that are made in those countries, many of them have already sent their submissions to participate in the next edition of the International Euro Arab Film Festival AMAL that will be held in Santiago de Compostela next month of October. She outstands the incipient and promising cinematographic industry that is being created in the countries of the Gulf region, countries that until now had no cinematographic past, due to cultural prohibitions (as an example, in Saudi Arabia, the only cinema theatre that exists in the country has no opening license). These difficulties have delayed the development of a cinematographic industry in those countries, still being very strong in histories narrative. At the moment United Arab Emirates can be considered like the most remarkable country in the Middle East, with the most advanced technical developments provided by "Dubai Media City" to the Arab audio-visual industry. The only Gulf country that has a developed cinematographic tradition is Iraq, which this year strongly outstands in the number and quality of the works that compete in international festivals, in spite of the complicated present political situation. In fact one of the surprises of this year in the international circuits has been the long featured film "AHLAAM" (Dreams) of the Iraqi film maker Mohamed Al Daradji, winner of the first prize in the Gulf Film Festival. The coordinator of Festival AMAL considers her visit to this region and the encounters maintained with directors, producers and other people involved in the cinematographic industry as very enriching and in the mean time she emphasizes the importance of supporting this emerging industry and discovering new very promising authors that have not arrived yet to the cinema international circuits.
